Stanley Cup Final Game 2 Preview
Monday night saw the Boston Bruins take a 1-0 series lead over the St. Louis Blues. The Blues will look to bounce back tonight and try to even the series at one game a piece.
Game 1 was dominated by the Bruins from the second period to the final horn. After going down 2-0 early in the second period the Bruins put their foot on the gas and didn't look back. They dominated the rest of the game and secured a 4-2 win.
Game 2 begins tonight and the Blues main focus will need to be staying out of the penalty box. They gave the Bruins 5 powerplays in game 1 and although the Bruins only scored on one of them, they are playing with fire if they keep being undisciplined.
Another key to success for the Blues will be the for them to be more physical. The Bruins have a lot of grinder type players and they love to take the body. The Blues will need to match their physicality more than they did in game 1. Look for Patrick Maroon to be a big factor in this game to set the tone along with the likes of Brayden Schenn and Colton Parayko.
Jordan Binnington played well in his first career Stanley Cup Final game, the defense in front of him however, did not. Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester we’re almost non existent in game 1. In order for the Blues to win this series these two will need to have a much bigger impact and it needs to start in game 2.
As for the Bruins, they got off to a slow start in game 1. A little surprising to see especially with the home ice advantage. Nonetheless, they were able to come back from being down 2-0 to win the game. A great sign for them is 3 of their 4 goals came from a third line player and two defenseman. If their top two lines get it going the Bruins could take command of this series real quick.
The key to success for the Bruins tonight will be for them to get off to a better start. Having the home ice advantage they need to keep the crowd rocking. Jordan Binnington does not seemed to get rattled no matter what happens but, the Bruins need to test him early and often. They did that in game 2 but not until the second period. A better start tonight and they could be looking an easy game 2 win.
Tuukka Rask has been the best goalie all post season, that is no secret. The Bruins rely heavily on their veteran goaltender and he has been the backbone of this team all playoffs. As long as he keeps doing his thing Boston will be extremely tough to beat.
My prediction for tonight is the Blues win 3-1 evening the series at one game a piece. Make sure you tune in to NBCSN at 8pm as there is nothing better than playoff hockey.
