UFC 239 Recap:Jones vs Santos
Saturday night UFC 239 took place from Las Vegas, Nevada in what was UFC’s card for international Fight Week. The main event was a showdown for the Light Heavyweight Championship Between Jon “Bones“ Jones and Thiago Santos. This card was stacked from the prelims to the main event. Let’s dive into the fights from the main card.
Welterweight Bout: Michael Chiesa vs Diego Sanchez
Chiesa was absolutely dominate the entire fight. He had a plan from the start an executed it from beginning to end. You have to give credit to Sanchez though as he did all he could to avoid getting submitted or knocked out. The fight lasted all three rounds and Chiesa won all three.
Result: Michael Chiesa by unanimous decision.
Light Heavyweight Bout: Luke Rockhold vs Jan Blachowicz
Rockhold came out swinging with some early big high kicks. It didn’t last long though as most of the round was spent with both guys in the clinch against the cage. Once they got separated both guys landed some good shots. Blachowicz landed a big kick at the bell and stunned Rockhold. Round 2 started with a bang as Rockhold landed a big shot but Blachowicz came back with a big shot of his own. Shortly after that Blachowicz threw a huge left that knocked out Rockhold. I mean this was just a nasty left hook and Rockhold got knocked into another lifetime.
Result: Jan Blachowicz by KO 1:39 in Round 2.
Welterweight Bout: Ben Askren vs Jorge Masvidal
This fight had a lot of bad blood coming into it. Askren was making his 2nd apperance in the UFC trying to remain undefeated in his career and Masvidal was coming off of two big wins. Something had to give here. Oh my god we witnessed the fastest knock out in UFC history it took 5 seconds for Masvidal to land and incredible flying knee. This was by far the craziest knockout I have ever seen. I love Ben Askren but my god this was awesome.
Results: Jorge Masvidal by KO 5 seconds in the first round.
Co-Main Event Women’s Bantamweight Championship: Amanda Nunes vs Holly Holm
The defending Champion Amanda Nunes was looking to keep her hot streak going as Holly Holm looked to win back the Bantamweight title. The first round was more of a feeling out process more than anything as both ladies landed some shots but nothing too major...Until Amanda Nunes caught Holm with a nasty kick and rocked Holm and followed it up with some vicious punches and the ref stepped in to stop it.
Results: Amanda Nunes by KO 4:10 in the first round.
Main Event Light Heavyweight Championship: Jon Jones vs Thiago Santos
The greatest of all time Jon “Bones” Jones looked to defend his Light Heavyweight title once again against Thiago Santos. I‘m a little biased because I’m a huge Jon Jones fan he’s so fun to watch. Santos started this fight very strong he’s a powerful dude and he fought a very good first round and he hit Jones with some heavy shots especially the leg kicks that he landed. Round 2 started weirdly as Santos threw a leg kick and looked like he hurt himself but seemed to recover enough to continue the fight. As the round continued though Santos leg really looked like it was bothering him. He kept pushing through though and looked better than either of Jones last two opponents. The 3rd round is where the action started to pick up as Santos and Jones both exchanged shots with Jones knocking down Santos with a nice counter. Santos was clearly struggling with his leg injury but still was throwing some bombs. Jones ended up catching him with an elbow that opens up a cut on Santos head. After in my opinion losing the first two rounds Jon Jones really took control of the 3rd round and got the round win as we headed to the Championship rounds. Round 4 Santos came out swinging with some powerful shots but Jones defense was too strong and he was able to avoid them. Santos stumbled as his leg continued to give him problems and he could easily have a torn something in his knee. Incredible that he was able to continue fighting and even throw kicks with an injured leg. Jones connected with some shots late in the 4th round that secured the round win for him. We headed to the final round with in my opinion a 2-2 fight. Santos came out firing landing some heavy shots but Jones looked unfazed and connected with some shots of his own. Santos leg would continue to be a problem as he struggled to put much weight on it. Santos still landed some nice shots and easily could have won the 5th round. This fight would come down to the judges and I’m glad I wasn’t one of them because it was that close.
Result: Jon Jones wins by spilt decision and retains his Light Heavyweight Championship.
