UFC 247: Jones vs Reyes Recap

Annnnnnnnnddddddd......Still!!!! That's right ladies and gents both of our champions retained their titles at UFC 247. The main card was extremely entertaining and I was impressed with all of the fights that I watched. Valentina is the real deal and needs a legit challenge when it comes to the women's flyweight division as she has pretty much beaten everyone there is to beat. As for Jon Jones, much of the talk coming into this fight was what is going to be next for him and that question was answered on Saturday night as well. What's next for the Light Heavyweight champion is a rematch with the man that almost beat him in Houston in Dominick Reyes. Jones lost 2 rounds for sure and possibly even a 3rd round but was still given the decision and the win at the end of the fight. It was a very entertaining night of fights and we have a full recap for you here....

Early Prelims:

I'm not even going to try an lie to you guys... I didn't watch any of these fights I was too busy watching the XFL and the Flyers, so here are the results of the early prelims if you care....

Featherweight Bout: Austin Lingo(7-0-0) vs Youssef Zalal(7-2-0)-Youssef Zala wins via decision

Bantamweight Bout: Andre Ewell(15-6-0) vs Jonathan Martinez(11-2-0)-Andrew Ewell wins via decision

Bantamweight Bout: Domingo Pilarte(8-2-0) vs Journey Newson(8-2-0)-Journey Newson wins via 1st round KO/TKO

This was the only highlight of the early prelims an absolute vicious knockout just 38 seconds into the 1st round. Journey Newson was clearly trying to make a name for himself. Hopefully next time he fights it will be on the regular prelims or even the main card.

Prelims:

So I somewhat paid attention to these fights, my Philadelphia Flyers were still on during these so I had it on TV2 and was casually glancing over every now and then. From what I saw we had some pretty good action. Of course the Duke/UNC game had to cut into the ESPN coverage so the prelims were forced to start on ESPNNews...I hate the way ESPN runs things but whatever only one fight was cut into and had to air on ESPNNews...

Bantamweight Bout: Miles John(10-0-0) vs Mario Bautista(7-1-0)-Mario Bautista wins via 2nd round KO/TKO

Welterweight Bout: Alex Morono(17-6-0) vs Khaos Williams(8-1-0)-Khaos Williams wins via 1st round KO/TKO

Holy shit this was fucking awesome...His nickname is Khaos and my god he absolutely killed it in there tonight. He was absolutely incredible and thank god the ref stepped in here because he may have killed Mornono if this fight would have kept going. Great performance by Williams and he may have just made a name for himself in the welterweight division as he improves to 9-1-0.

Women’s Flyweight Bout: Lauren Murphy(11-4-0) vs Andrea Lee(11-3-0)-Lauren Murphy wins via decision. BORING, not to take anthing away from these two girls but my Flyers were scoring mad goals and i was focused on them instead of this fight...But Lauren Murphy was able to pick up the win much to the displeasure of the crowd.

Middleweight Bout: Trevin Giles(11-2-0) vs James Krause (27-7-0)-Trevin Giles wins via decision. I missed this entire fight so i cant even say how it actually went but Giles picked up the in according to the judges.

Main Card:

Heavyweight Bout: Derrick Lewis(22-7-0,1NC) vs llir Latifi(14-7-0,1NC)-Derrick Lewis picked up the win via decision...ill be honest from what I saw of this fight I had Lewis losing for most of the fight. I'm not mad that he won since I had him winning in my parlay(Yes, I took a parlay on all 5 main card fights) but he didn't really cement himself as a main event contedner.

Featherweight Bout: Mirsad Bektic(13-2-0) vs Dan Ige(12-2-0)-Dan Ige Wins Via Decision

Heavyweight Bout: Juan Adams(5-2-0) vs Justin Tafa(3-1-0)- Justin Tafa wins via 1st round KO/TKO

Women's Flyweight Championship: Valentina Shevchenko(18-3-0) vs Katlyn Chookagian(13-2-0)-Shevchenko wins via 3rd round KO/TKO

Light Heavyweight Championship: Jon Jones(25-1-0, 1NC) vs Dominick Reyes(12-0-0)-Jon Jones wins via Decision. WOW!!! It took all five rounds to determine a winner and it was so much closer than I think anyone thought it would be. Dominick Reyes proved that he is a legit contender in the Light Heavyweight division. This fight was so much closer than I think anyone thought it would be and honestly im not sure that the judges got it right...Jones won the fight by decision but my god this was such a close fight. Reyes was so impressive and I give him all the credit in the world as he legitimately could have won this fight. He for sure won rounds 1 and 2 without a doubt. He ran into problem in the last three rounds though as round 3 he might have won the round to most people but he didn't do enough to win it convincingly. Jones sort of took over in the championship rounds as he was able to secure a few takedowns which was ultimately the difference in the fight. Jon Jones last few fights have proven that he may have lost a step or he has just completely underestimated his last three opponents. Saturday night proved that even the great Jon "Bones" Jones is prone to being beat on any given night. This was a great fight from start finish and I for one would not be opposed to a rematch in the near future. To me, that is the only fight that should be next for Jones as he has beaten just about everyone in the light heavyweight division and Reyes was his best competition. If Jones had won this fight in dominate fashion than I would say it was time for him to move up to heavyweight but he didn't and I think it is only fair that Reyes gets a rematch because Saturday's fight was just way too close. Below is a look at the total strikes for the entire fight round by round...

As you can see it was close the entire way and the judges may have not gotten it correct but Jon Jones remains your UFC Light Heavyweight Champion.
